Did You Know? We’ve Been Appointed BSI Associate Consultant for ISO 45003

by | Apr 8, 2024

In the pursuit of healthier and more productive work environments, the British Standards Institution (BSI) takes centre stage.

Renowned as the national standards body of the United Kingdom and esteemed worldwide for its management systems certifications, BSI plays a crucial role in shaping organisational practices globally.

BSI’s role in relation to ISO

BSI plays a significant role in the development and adoption of international standards through its relationship with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

ISO membership:

as a member body of ISO, BSI actively participates in the development of international standards across various industries and sectors.

Adoption of ISO standards:

BSI often incorporates ISO standards into the British Standards system, making them applicable and recognised within the UK. BSI facilitates the adoption process by assessing the relevance and applicability of ISO standards to the British market and endorsing them as British Standards.

National Mirror Committees:

BSI establishes National Mirror Committees (NMCs) for various technical committees within ISO. These committees represent the UK’s interests in the development of international standards. Through these committees, BSI provides input, expertise, and feedback on proposed ISO standards, ensuring that they meet the needs and requirements of the UK stakeholders.

Harmonisation with European Standards (EN):

BSI also works closely with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) to develop European Standards (EN). Many EN standards are developed based on ISO standards. BSI ensures consistency and alignment between ISO, EN, and BS standards, minimising duplication and facilitating trade within the European and international markets.

Certification and compliance:

BSI provides certification services to organisations that comply with various standards, including ISO standards. This certification signifies that an organisation meets the requirements specified in the relevant ISO standard, enhancing its credibility and competitiveness in the global marketplace.

Overall, BSI acts as a bridge between ISO and the UK, facilitating the adoption, development, and implementation of international standards within the British context.

That’s why it’s such big news that we, at Dharma Centre for Wellbeing, have been appointed BSI Associate Consultant for ISO 45003.

What are international standards of workplace wellbeing?

International standards of workplace wellbeing encompass a range of guidelines and frameworks aimed at promoting the health, safety, and overall wellbeing of employees in various organisations worldwide. Some key international standards include:

1. ISO 45003: Psychological Health and Safety at Work: Managing Psychosocial Risks

This standard provides guidance on managing psychosocial risks in the workplace, focusing on the psychological health and safety of employees.

2. ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

This standard provides a framework for organisations to manage occupational health and safety risks and improve worker safety, reduce workplace accidents, and enhance overall wellbeing.

3. ISO 9001: Quality Management Systems

While primarily focused on quality management, ISO 9001 also emphasises the importance of employee wellbeing through factors such as competence, training, and involvement in quality improvement processes.

4. ISO 26000: Guidance on Social Responsibility

This standard encourages organisations to consider the social impacts of their activities, including the wellbeing of workers, communities, and other stakeholders.

Why is ISO 45003 so essential?

Work-related stress, anxiety, and depression have emerged as pressing concerns affecting both individuals and economies worldwide. The ISO 45003 framework offers a proactive approach to address these challenges, ultimately contributing to improved employee engagement, retention, and performance. By prioritising psychological health and safety, organisations can create environments where employees thrive, driving productivity and fostering a culture of wellbeing.

The significance of ISO 45003 extends beyond the workplace, with profound implications for global economies and societal wellbeing. Work-related mental health issues not only diminish productivity but also erode the quality of life for countless individuals. Through adherence to ISO 45003 principles, organisations can mitigate these adverse effects, promoting resilience and flourishing in both professional and personal spheres.

In my business, we already have ISO 45001 – do we need ISO 45003?

The short answer to this question is, yes. To take your business from good to great, you need to incorporate ISO 45003 into your health and safety management approach to ensure you are taking reasonable steps to address psychosocial hazards in the workplace.

We recently met with Kate Field, BSI’s Global Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing, to discuss the importance of taking your ISO 45001 certification a necessary step further with ISO 45003 and this is what she had to say:
